The pompadour thrives on preparation. If your pomp collapses by noon, the issue is technique—not hair type. Here’s our reliable routine.

1) Start with a proper wash

Use a lightweight shampoo and a small amount of conditioner on the ends only. Towel-dry so hair is damp, not dripping.

2) Pre-style for volume

Apply a heat-protecting pre-styler (sea salt spray or volumizing tonic). Distribute evenly with a wide-tooth comb.

3) Blow-dry in direction

Using a round brush, blow-dry hair up and back. Work from fringe to crown. Keep air moving; avoid lingering heat on one spot.

4) Choose the right pomade

  • Oil-based for authentic shine and pliability.
  • Water-based for easy wash-out and firm hold.
  • Matte clay for modern texture with lower sheen.

5) Lock it in

Emulsify product in palms, then apply back to front. Finish with a comb for structure. Optional: a light mist of hairspray for extra security.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping pre-styler (volume suffers).
  • Applying too much product (weight drags the style down).
  • Blow-drying aimlessly (direction is everything).
